I have been prepping for forty years. When my daughter was a little girl, I began having dreams that I was running from a totalitarian government, escaping from a city to a farm or the woods or the mountains. I began to buy books and other supplies on a small scale.
Thirty years ago, I moved to a semi-rural area of the Northeast. We began gardening on a large scale and raising chickens. About ten years ago, I started prepping in a much more serious fashion, and the dreams stopped.
In these past thirty years, I have learned to save seed; heat with wood; butcher chickens; preserve food by freezing, canning, drying, and fermenting. I do my own carpentry and plumbing, and I am not afraid of power tools.
The COVID-19 pandemic has only confirmed for me the need to be prepared. Are you ready?
Love this, Marie. I know first hand your ingenuity and healthy life-style. I hope you include some of your recipes as well. I have never gardened but I am trying to learn this year. My yard is small, shaded, and I can’t bend well so I’ve tried raised containers. I can’t wait to see if I can grow something.
Hello Karen! There are some really good books on container gardening. I can’t think of any titles right off the top of my head, but you might try Dave’s Garden or some other website for ideas. And I love your idea about including recipes. I hadn’t thought of that! Anyway, yes, many people grow great things in containers.

My apologies for not getting back to you sooner. It’s been a crazy week: I’m packing to move to a more rural area with more land (more garden space, more animals); I’m teaching several classes online for a local community college, and one of my classes, a section of remedial writing, had their virtual midterm essay to take on Wednesday; and my local weather is threatening me with a hard freeze tonight, so I had plants to bring in.
I’ve looked at your website, and I like what you’ve got going. Especially in these COVID times of furloughs and businesses closing, having a place for people to find free stuff is pretty cool.

I’m not sure what you mean by “source experience.” The details I write about are from the day-to-day lessons I have learned by working out in the garden and making many mistakes along the way. I have learned more from those mistakes than from just about anything I have ever read or any seminar I have ever attended. Many times, I see the mistake in the garden, and then I research it online to find out exactly what happened and why. Hope this helps.
